The Not-So-Obvious Winning Edge

What if you could miraculously wake up tomorrow and transform every area of your life? There is a ‘not-so-obvious’ secret that is guaranteed to do this faster than you ever thought possible. Hal Elrod, the author of The Miracle Morning, promises that it only takes six minutes a day. Seriously?

One of the most important concepts ever discovered in the field of human performance is called the “winning edge concept.” This concept states that “small differences in ability can translate into enormous differences in results.” Simply, how you wake up each day dramatically affects your level of success in every single area of your life. Intentional mornings generate productive days leading to a stellar life. Why would you ever choose mediocracy?

An extraordinary life is all about daily, continuous improvements in the areas that matter most. – Robin Sharma

For you to stop settling for less than you deserve and to create the level of personal, professional, and financial success you desire, you must dedicate time each day to becoming qualified and capable of creating what you want.

Hal’s advice begins with establishing a morning routine of six practices for six minutes:

1.   Silence – Get grounded. Sit in silence, meditate and focus on your breath to achieve clarity and peace of mind.

2.   Affirmation – Jot down what you want and why, who you are committed to being, and what you’re committed to doing to change your life. Read daily.

3.   Visualization – Align your thoughts and feelings with your vision. Mentally rehearse what it feels like to achieve your future goals.

4.   Exercise – Motion creates energy. Manage your emotions, enhance your health, self-confidence, and mental acuity.

5.   Learning – Read something for your personal development from experts, those who have done what you want to do.

6.   Writing – Journal. Get your thoughts down on paper to gain valuable insights, ideas, breakthroughs, and lessons learned.

Whether you’re an early bird or night owl, how you spend the first hour of your day becomes key to unlocking your full potential and creating the amazing life and career you desire. When you create a morning practice, you change your entire life. My friend, it’s worth passing on the snooze button. Rise up!

Living in Wonder

Our steps are not measured in miles but in the amount of time we are pulled forward by awe.  This is another gift from our national parks, to be led by the vistas, to forget what nags us at home and remember what sustains us, the horizon. – Terry Tempest Williams

Looking to reconnect with your essential self, tap into your deepest desire and experience a newfound sense of peace? In this fast-paced world of technology and endless to-do lists, of course, you are and it’s likely what’s missing from your joy cup. I’ll let you in on a secret: One must go outwards in nature to reconnect inwards.

I’m fresh off co-facilitating a five-day women’s retreat with the Sedona Women’s Institute, exploring three amazing national parks in the heart of Utah. We hiked, marveled at the vistas from early morning dawn to late night star-gazing. We sat in circle and shared our dreams. There was writing, reflection, and laughing in the sisterhood – plenty of belly-aching laughing!

Arches National Park, Women’s Retreat May 2019

One of the things I appreciated the most was the downtime for self-reflection, meditation, and journaling. Our Red Cliffs Lodge luxury cabins were right on the banks of the Colorado River. Horses greeted me on the opposite side. I found myself having conversations with the mighty river, horses, trees, and canyons. Canyons that have been in the surrounding Moab, Utah area dating back 290 million years. Pin drop.

Technology and to-do lists, don’t exist here. Only a profound sense of self and oneness with everything and everyone. That feeling brings tremendous clarity – on your values, beliefs, needs, and dreams…IF you allow yourself to truly live in the present moment. The rewards are priceless my friend.

Whether I’m living in the high desert of New Mexico gazing at the Sandia Mountains, hiking in the Santa Fe National Forest, from Sedona to Moab, the Grand Tetons or Yosemite National Park, or biking on a wooded path in Michigan, this I know for sure: Living, working, and playing in nature is Non-Negotiable for me. I’m my best self in tune with creation – and doing so leads me to the path of wonder and creativity. Funny how that works.

When was the last time you felt a sense of oneness with everything and everyone? How are you living in the present moment? Are you living your best self? Join me, I’ll meet you there.

On the TEDX Stage!

Watch Beth’s TEDx talk on YouTube TEDxABQ – here!

Doing a TED Talk has been on my bucket list for several years. I realize most people fear public speaking over death. Of course, I’m the opposite. I wanted to do this before I die. Like everything I do, I applied on a whim. I figured what can ‘they’ do but say no? Let’s just say I was surprised when two weeks later, I received the congratulations email. They said YES!

{Gulp}

Okay. I thought how hard can this be? I’ll write my talk, get on stage and yammer on for 10 minutes. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The TED journey has been one of the biggest challenges of my life. Seriously.

Twice a week for two months, we met as a group with four professional speaking coaches. Writing the talk, presenting, and feedback, editing the talk, rewriting the talk, presenting, and feedback. It went like that in an endless loop. For over 100 hours.

Did I mention the tears, frustration, freakin’ fear, and questioning the meaning of life…and why the hell did I want to do this? Someone, anyone, please remind me!

Because it’s my mission to empower women to stop sleepwalking and live their dreams. Period.

I’ve learned many lessons through this process, which I’ll share later at great length, but I do know this for sure:

When you are serious about your dream and mission, nothing or no one will stop you. Not blood, sweat, tears, fears or any lame excuse. You will show up like a hangry Terminator on a bad hair day and will not stop until you achieve your goal.

When was the last time you felt THAT driven to succeed? Don’t sleepwalk lady. There’s too much life to be living out here. Join me on stage! The universe has your back. Stop waiting, Start now. It’s so worth it!

So…I have to ask you, are you going to fight for your happiness, or let another year pass you by wondering why you don’t have the life and career of your dreams? Give your inner-champion permission to ignite your own life revolution! – Beth Bryce, TEDxABQ Women 2018

Gut Check Your Impact

Regardless of the type of organization you work at, you will likely find core values and/or a mission statement visible on the walls. But does your organization have an impact manifesto? The word “impact” sounds powerful, even if you utter it under your breath. That’s because working intentionally to deliver impact is powerful.

I’m a fortunate soul. My vocation as a career coach has me guiding others on a daily basis. In fact, doing purposeful work was the primary driver in my transformative career switch from accounting to counseling in 2012. The former was lacking significantly in the impact arena. Since my soul was melting into a puddle on the floor, I decided to change course. Pursuing impactful work that I’m passionate about has been one of the best decisions of my life. The sacrifices are worth it; the rewards are tremendous. It’s what I wish for you.

Fast forward to the present day. Immersed in the belief that I had been making a significant impact through my work, I received a wakeup call. Don’t you just love those?

“To those who are given much, much is expected.” – Maya Angelou

I recently attended a talk led by the founder of Work Alchemy, Ursula Jorch. She challenged us to make an even bigger impact on our work, community, and the world. Jorch posed three simple questions to gut check the level of impact we’re personally and professional making.

  1. How can you make a bigger impact inside of your business?
  2. How can you and/or your business make a bigger impact serving the community?
  3. How can you and/or your business make a global impact?

These are great starters for a strategic planning session leaning in at the table for your business, with a team or just you.

I’m not suggesting you leave your current employer.  However, you must live your life with intention.  Chances are if you are reading this article you are well educated with special talents and abilities.  You can find ways to be impactful outside of your employment.  In fact, you should.  You have an obligation to do so.

It doesn’t have to cost a cent but it will cost your time, energy, and pieces of your heart. Volunteer in your community, mentor, donate your services, or raise a phenomenal child who clearly will save the world. (Well, the latter will cost you boatloads of money and your entire heart; I lied.)

Be honest: Not everyone has had the opportunities that you’ve had. It’s your duty to give back and make a difference. We need you. You can do more. Begin today.

Hoof prints on my soul

Messengers come in all forms and this past weekend, it was a beautiful butterscotch mare named Gypsy with legs of different colors.   Did I mention her round, soulful eyes – mesmerizing deep chocolate pools beckoning me to release and dive in?

Gypsy

Any chance I get, I love visiting Lynn Clifford [horse and people whisperer extraordinaire] at Arrowhead Ranch for her evening equine meditation program.  It’s springtime at the ranch.  The evening is a tad cooler and the wind is just breezy enough to kiss my lips and muss my hair.  Yet warm enough to wear a simple blue jean jacket and ChapStick.

Lynn Clifford & Beth Bryce

The horses are quiet and winding down as they munch dinner with the sun descending ever so slowly.  They seem relaxed, pleased almost that they don’t have to work.  Their role is to simply bare witness, be a messenger, teacher, or confidant depending upon how we  show up.

The horses always try to meet you – but only if you are open and willing to introduce your truest self.

Honestly, half the time I watch the other 13 women in silent, walking meditation, and one brave man, as they timidly approach and mingle with the horses pushing boundaries.  Mostly the horses push boundaries, some of us push back.  That’s the beauty of the evening, we have a choice.

But don’t you always have a choice through the twists and turns of life?

As I watch the ladies dance with their chosen partner, I wonder if they are tuned in and listening to the messages the horses are trying to whisper.  Are they brave enough to ask the question they’ve been avoiding for quite some time?

I wander back to my present moment and stare down Gypsy.  We stand face to face for ten minutes watching to see who blinks first.   I’m certain it was me.  I stood there searching for the answer, any answer, to a question I wasn’t even sure I was asking.

Beth’s message depicted

Suddenly, Gypsy’s message was clear, “You already know the answer Beth, you must press on – the world needs more love and compassion, people are waiting.”  In that moment I was flooded with the faces of people I’ve been blessed to work with, family, friends I haven’t talked to in months, some years, all of whom I love.  Deeply.

I realized they are like hoof prints on my soul.  Our exchanges, however brief or long, are imprinted forever.  And for that I’m extremely grateful.  Isn’t that what we are all seeking; deep connection?  I believe so.  On that note, I drove home with a simple smile and a sense of renewal, gazing at the pink and purple mystic New Mexican sunset – like only New Mexico effortlessly delivers.

What or who has been your messenger recently?

Are you paying attention?

And how are you living your heart wide open?

Sound fascinating even intriguing?  I encourage you to seriously consider an opportunity of a lifetime to be cracked wide open on a journey of self-discovery at my October Santa Fe retreat, with Lynn and her tribe of horses, Susan Perry and myself.  The magic is beginning, that is, if you choose to show up as your truest self.  I hope you do, the world is waiting on you.

Women, Find your inner champion

“We are each responsible for our own life.  If you’re holding anyone else accountable for your happiness, you’re wasting your time.” – Oprah Winfrey

Women are more empowered than ever to rise up, find their voice and take personal responsibility.  Following the headlines on women’s rights and marches, #MeToo, and Oprah’s riveting speech at the 2018 Golden Globes declaring, “A new day is on the horizon”, I’m wondering will we choke on missed opportunity?  We each have a responsibility to be living our best lives, unencumbered by limitations set by others and ourselves.  How are you creating a personal life revolution?

Ten years ago I started my Master’s thesis on the differences in gender leadership to prove women make better leaders.  My results were surprising.  Women and men are equally successful leaders with different skills.  However, men are perceived as superior leaders by both genders, men and women.  Ouch.  Little has changed from my thesis recommendations encouraging women to take personal responsibility for their career advancement.  Ten years of coaching professional women, I’ve witnessed their struggles regardless of background and education.  The top things that block women from advancing are: a lack of self-worth, self-promotion, and personal leadership.

Self-worth – Settling for a mediocre career or not getting paid fairly is directly tied to your self-worth and lack of confidence.  Women are 8x less likely to ask for more money than men.  Salary negotiation, annual reviews, and promotions are opportunities to ask.  Did you know management’s perception of a woman that doesn’t ask for more is she’s not leadership material or intelligent?  Ouch.  Do market research, take a negotiation class, or phone a friend.  Practice in the mirror and repeat after me, “I am worthy.”

Self-promotion – Women work hard.  However, we make the mistake by assuming this equals recognition and reward.  We get angry after an abysmal increase or being passed over for a promotion.  You must learn how to discuss your awesomeness, stellar contributions and your expectations.  Your boss is busy, you can’t assume they know you should be nominated for employee of the year.  Chances are they haven’t seen you in weeks. Start by having a courageous conversation asking for regular 1:1 monthly meetings.  Courageous conversations are politically correct right now.

Personal Leadership – It’s not enough to take action, women must be strategic.  I often hear, ‘I’m too busy.”  While you’re busy taking care of everyone but you, your competition is mining for opportunities, networking with successful people, building teams, and becoming visible. Men do this exceptionally well.  Don’t wait for someone to miraculously hand you a new job or promotion; it’s all on you.

Yes, a new day is dawning.  Will you seize this historical moment and fight for your career success or sit on the sidelines, letting another day pass you by wondering why you don’t have the career of your dreams, aren’t being treated fairly or getting paid your worth?  As the media frequently touts, 2018 is the Year of the Woman!  You officially have permission to find your inner-champion.  I expect nothing less.

My Own Life Revolution

“I’ve been absolutely terrified every minute of my life and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.” – Georgia O’Keeffe, 99

I bought a mountain retreat home in New Mexico!

For those of you keeping score; Yes, I’ve manifested everything I said I wanted five years ago and wrote about it years in advance in my Women on Fire book chapter, “I’m Marrying Me”…

  1. Walking from a Corporate career and stepping into a new, invigorating, successful, career — loving what I’m doing; coaching, writing, and teaching — blessed to be making a significant impact in people’s lives.
  2. A wonderful employer who believes in me, shares my mission and values, and supports me 1000%. I’ll still be working with the university, coaching virtually from my home and flying back and forth to MI for special events.
  3. An abundant life filled with prosperity; family, friends, opportunities, finances, and health – I even lost 20 lbs recently – once I set my mind to it, it was easy!
  4. Living in a place that fuels me; diverse and rich in culture, art, people, nature, climate, and food…did I mention the food?
  5. Sunshine 360 days out of the year, surrounded by mountains and an expansive energy that is undeniable and indescribable.
  6. My dream home that I found after relentlessly searching since April — that will be a blessed, gathering place for all those I love and who love me; friends, family, clients.

Yes, I did this. Me. I Created my Own Life Revolution,

and You can too!
